The necessity for differentiated responses arises due to the significant surge in nitrogen fertilizer prices, posing a serious threat to food security. To sustain the production of staple cereals in agricultural systems with varying levels of fertilization, it becomes imperative to explore integrated management strategies encompassing both organic and inorganic nitrogen sources in high- and low-intensity cereal production. According to estimates, adopting such an integrated approach could yield substantial reductions in nitrogen fertilizer usage: by 11% in India, 49% in Ethiopia, and 44% in Malawi. This strategy involves utilizing more cost-effective fertilizers with a high nitrogen content, such as urea, in conjunction with compost and legumes, particularly aimed at optimizing nitrogen utilization in deficient systems. Furthermore, embracing more efficient and targeted nitrogen fertilizer application would prove beneficial for systems with nitrogen surpluses. Geospatially diverse fertilization strategies should prioritize supplying nitrogen-rich fertilizers to low-yielding and nitrogen-deficient regions, while ensuring balanced fertilization of nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and micronutrients in high-yielding systems.

KASP markers were developed based on the genotyping results generated through DArTSeqTM and the AxiomTM Wheat Breeders Genotyping Array. Genotyping results included Leymus racemosus, several T3BL.3NsbS translocation lines in CIMMYT elite spring bread wheat genetic backgrounds, and other CIMMYT elite parents. KASP markers were designed based on the consensus sequence of DArTSeq and Axiom markers that could clearly distinguish the source and translocation lines from other CIMMYT elite parents. The KASP markers were selected to be bi-allelic and are currently used at CIMMYT for transferring translocations of Leymus racemosus in additional elite spring bread wheat backgrounds.

This dataset is built from a survey among wheat farming households in Bihar state. The survey was conducted by the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT) between August and September 2021. In total, the questionnaire was administered to 1,008 wheat-growing households. The survey elicited information on various topics, for example, socio-demographic characteristics, wheat cultivation, varietal use, access to seed sources, and asset ownership. We collected gender-disaggregated data asking men and women in the same household a predefined set of questions, such as influence in intra-household decision-making.

A household survey was conducted from May to October 2018 in the Chüy, Issyk-Kul, and Osh oblasts of the Kyrgyz Republic. The dataset offers insights into production patterns, the socio-economic and demographic situations of farmers and households growing wheat, factors influencing their production decisions, the adoption of new wheat varieties, and the impacts of wheat production on their livelihoods. The project received funding from CRP WHEAT. Approximately 700 households growing wheat were interviewed. The survey was designed to collect data through face-to-face interviews. The questionnaire was supplied by CIMMYT, and its final version incorporated feedback from a pilot survey conducted in May. The questionnaire was prepared in English, Russian, and Kyrgyz. Data collection took place from June 1 to July 20, 2018.

The objective of the Landscape Diagnostic Survey (LDS) for wheat is to bridge the existing data-gap around current production practices of wheat, and also to help in evidence-based planning. The LDS is designed in a way that data is collected from randomly selected farmers spread uniformly within the Feed the Future (FtF) districs. The data has been collected from farmers largest wheat plot for 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021. The surveys for the year 2020, and 2021 were done via phone surveys due to COVID and can be used as panel data with the hhid. Survey questionnaire captures all production practices applied by farmers from land preparation to harvesting, including detailed sections on fertilizer use, weed control and irrigation application. Data is captured through electronically enabled Open Data Kit (ODK) tool on mobile phone or tablet. The sample size for this survey in 2018 is 1577 households, in 2019 is 1207 households, in 2020 is 1028 households, and 953 households for 2021. The inputs use were asked for largest rice grown plots as farms may have multiple plots and inputs use might be different in different plots.

Agriculture is the most severely affected sector due to drought-like situations. Bihar is one of the most vulnerable states to drought due to its geographical location, and its high dependency on rainfed agriculture. The first survey, in Kharif season 2022 covered 518 farmers from 11 districts, 39 blocks and 79 villages of Bihar in October 2022. The second survey was the phone survey which was conducted to collect the data for the Rabi season 2022. We interviewed 339 farmers out of the 518 farmers in June 2023. To validate the first phone survey, we interviewed 229 farmers out of the 518 farmers. These drought impact surveys were designed in a way that data are collected from randomly selected farmers spread uniformly within a KVK domain/district. The survey questionnaire captures all production practices applied by farmers from land preparation to harvesting, including detailed sections on crop establishment, sources and methods of irrigation, fertilizer use, weed control and cost of irrigation. Data is captured through the electronically enabled Open Data Kit (ODK) tool on mobile phone or tablet. This contributes as a useful database which can be used by researchers, and policymakers for developing Bihar’s drought management strategy to protect the farmers from future drought-like situations.

This dataset is derived from a study focused on developing an efficient method for arabinoxylan quantification, called PentoQuant. It includes phenotypic and molecular characterization data from 606 bread wheat samples developed through the spring bread wheat breeding program. The dataset comprises total and water-extractable arabinoxylan content values measured using the PentoQuant protocol. Furthermore, it incorporates results obtained from analyzing the same 606 lines with four molecular markers associated with two major QTLs for arabinoxylan content variation in wheat, located on chromosomes 1B and 6B.
