Maize lethal necrosis (MLN) is a disease caused by two viruses that has threatened food security for smallholder farmers in sub-Saharan Africa. Strong resistance to MLN was conferred by a recessive QTL on chromosome 6. This QTL was identified in the KS23 germplasm from Thailand. The genotypic data provided in this study were used to elucidate the enzyme potentially underlying the MLN resistance. The identification of the gene and the impact of knocking it out are described in the accompanying publication.
New and improved maize hybrids, developed by the CIMMYT Global Maize Program, are available for uptake by public and private sector partners, especially those interested in marketing or disseminating hybrid maize seed across Latin America and similar agro-ecological zones. Following a rigorous trialing and a stage-gate advancement process culminating in the 2023 Stage 5 trials, CIMMYT advanced a total of four (4) new elite maize hybrids in Latin America in 2024. Phenotypic data collected in Stage 4 and Stage 5 trials for the four selected hybrids as well as information about the trial sites are provided in this dataset. These trials were conducted through a network of partners, including NARS and private seed companies, in Latin America under various management and environmental conditions. Breeding analyses may include pedigree information and genotypic data. The wheat data in this dataset were used to asssess the accuracy of genomic predictons when the pedigree or genetic similarity matrix is combined with the genomic similarity matrix. This study included 5 single-environment models 5 multi-environments models with genotype-by-environment interactions (GE). The results of the analyses are reported in the accompanying article.
This dataset contains variety-level seed production and sales data of 297 public and private maize seed producers in Mexico during the period 2011-2019. The dataset was compiled using four different sources. The first is the MasAgro seed marketing survey, administered from 2013 to 2019 to MasAgro affiliated seed companies to monitor their seed sales and the uptake of new MasAgro hybrids. The number of companies that responded to the seed marketing survey each year was: 2013 (n=29), 2014 (n=24), 2015 (n=39), 2016 (n=42), 2017 (n=42), 2018 (n=52), 2019 (n=61). The second is the CIMMYT germplasm impact survey, a cross-sectional survey applied to thirty-nine MasAgro seed companies in 2015, to collect information of their 2014 seed sales, seed origin, variety type, variety colour, and first year of introduction to the market. The third is the MasAgro product portfolio survey, responded by thirty-one MasAgro seed firms in 2020 to cover existing information gaps, specially the 2011-2012 seed sales, company size (seed sales and number of employees) and each product’s first year of introduction to the market. All surveys were handled via e-mail by the MasAgro maize direction in the CIMMYT Global Maize Program. However, to protect the confidentiality of seed companies, all personal and commercial information on private companies collected through email surveys was made confidential. These data were complemented with official maize seed production statistics provided by the National Seed Inspection and Certification Agency (SNICS). The final dataset contains detailed seed production and sales figures of the entire maize seed industry in Mexico for the period 2011-2019.
Every year, the MasAgro maize component of the Sustainable Modernization of Traditional Agriculture project (MasAgro) established a seed evaluation network in the three mega-environments of maize production in Mexico (Subtropic, Tropic and Highlands) to evaluate all materials developed by CIMMYT breeders for MasAgro, and assess their performance vis-à-vis public and private materials under development or readily available in the market. This dataset contains grain yield (GY) information (N=897) of subtropical, tropical and highlands’ white (n=582) and yellow (n=315) hybrids evaluated from 2011 to 2019. Yield data were previously processed and analyzed by CIMMYT's Subtropical, Tropical and Highlands maize breeding programmes. Open-pollinated varieties (OPVs) were excluded to compare GY of only hybrids. Hybrids were classified into five categories based on the entity responsible for their development or the proprietary holder. These categories are: CIMMYT MasAgro (hybrids developed by CIMMYT for MasAgro, Public (hybrids developed by public NARS), Private national (hybrids developed by national companies using proprietary germplasm); and Multinational (hybrids developed by multinational companies). The dataset is used to compare GY of MasAgro, public, private national and multinational hybrids across all years (2011-2019), for each colour – yellow and white maize – and mega-environment – subtropic, tropics and highlands. To obtain a fair comparison between different hybrid categories, it is advisable to use the sub-dataset (n=341) containing GY of the top two white and two yellow hybrids evaluated in each mega-environment from 2011 to 2019. This is because only the top one or two commercial multinational checks were used in the MasAgro seed trials network each year.
To dissect the genetic architecture of grain yield and flowering traits under drought stress, a genome-wide association study (GWAS) was conducted using 236 test-crossed maize lines. The materials were evaluated under managed drought and optimal growing conditions in multiple environments using seven multi-locus GWAS models (mrMLM, FASTmrMLM, FASTmrEMMA, pLARmEB, pKWmEB, ISIS EM-BLASSO, and FARMCPU) from mrMLM and GAPIT R packages. Genomic prediction with RR-BLUP model was applied on BLUEs across locations under optimum and drought conditions. The GbS data used for the analyses are included in this dataset.
Hybrid maize seed production in Africa can face reduced yields based on the damage that may be incurred when detasseling female plants. Moreover, incomplete detasseling may lead to impurities hybrid seed production. A unique nuclear genetic male sterility seed production technology, referred to as Ms44-SPT, was developed to reduce these hybrid seed production challenges. Data collected to assess the impact of the Ms44-SPT technology on leaf loss during detasseling and on seed production are reported in this dataset.
